Between Generations Interviews

The Between Generations project of Girl Guides of PEI is best represented in the interviews completed by numerous Guides across the Island. It was a great way to for the Guides of today to also connect with the past Guides and help document the evolution of Island Guiding throughout the decades.

My Grandmother and Guiding

My name is Amy Doyle. I am 11 years old and in the Cornwall Girl Guides. I heard about this Between Generations Challenge from my girl guide leader. I phoned my grandma, Ethel Bennett, in Newfoundland and interviewewed her. The questions I asked and the answers she answered are below.

What was the year that you joined Girl Guides? How old were you?
I was 31 in the year 1966.

What did you first join as?
I joined as a Brownie Leader.

What did your uniform look like?

My uniform was a blue, heavy cotton, below-the-knee dress. It had a collar, big pockets below the waist and buttoned from the top to the waist. It also had a elastic belt that I could hook my whistle, purse and other things on.

Are you still a member?
Yes I am. I am part of a group called the Trefoil Guild. It is a group for retired leaders.

What did you like about guides?
I liked the all around program , it taught the girls life skills.

What did you dislike about guides?
I didn't dislike anything!

What was your favorite badge?
I liked the cooking badge the best. We used to go to the hut to bake cookies and then, we would go around to the senior citizen homes and give them out. It was fun.

What was guides like compared to now?
When I joined guides, there were a lot more guide groups. and alot more girls in them.

Do you have any daughters that are/were in the guiding movement?
Yes I do. I have four girls that went through the program. They started in brownies and finished in rangers. Three of them are leaders and one of them is retired.

If you were to change one thing about guides, what would it be?

I don't think that I would change anything.

Is there anything else that you would like to tell me about your experience in guiding?
Well I think its a really great program and I like the idea of the girls only. Like I said before, I like the program a lot.
